The goals of biological science and engineering are, for the most part, fundamentally different. Biology is primarily an analytic science, whereas engineering is concerned more with synthesis. On the other hand, medicine and engineering have much more in common. For example, the problems of clinical therapy and control engineering have many similar features. In fact, it is probably true that most if not all problems in clinical therapy can be formulated as problems in optimal control. We hasten to add, however, that mere formulation of such problems in the manner indicated is far from a guarantee for a practical solution.
